Al Schroeder on Magellan by Stephen Crowley

For lovers of large superhero teams. For Legion of Super-Heroes fans, Avengers groupees, Justice League cheerleaders, X-Men extremists...
Magellan is the Legion Academy, the X-Men's Westchester mansion, and the Justice League's Watchtower all rolled into one. The main focus is Casey, a non-powered recruit trying desperately to fit in with her multipowered teammates---think Cap during the "Cap's Kookie Quartet" version of the Avengers...but there are Magellanites of all levels, from the Superman-level Epoch to the Brainiac Five level Kwan to Charisma, a cross between Supergirl and Britney Spears. If you like the superhero genre, you'll like this. ... read it now!

Before I talk about Eugene, I want to talk about Stan Yan's "Wang." In Stan's modern incarnation of Eugene, his features are streamlined, his body emaciated, and his eyes bulging in shock and with good reason.
Before I talk about Eugene, I want to talk about Stan Yan's "Wang." In Stan's modern incarnation of Eugene, his features are streamlined, his body emaciated, and his eyes bulging in shock and with good reason. Although a number of Eugene's misfortunes are not displayed explicitly, they often imply a sexual deviancy beyond description. When I first read the "Wang," I found myself rearing from disbelief at the turn of events in the characters' lives. Oh, and it's a pretty damn funny read as well. Now let's talk about the past. "The Pre-History of the Wang" is just that. You see Stan's early concept of the character Eugene as a superhero parody. Even in its early days, you can spot an eye of a keen satirist. He's refurbished these older strips for the web with some very nice coloring. This isn't your annoying artist's revisionist history either (think Star Wars), but a simple enhancement of an already fun ride. ... read it now!

Nemesis may be a total package web comic. A polished political superhero action murder mystery.

Nemesis may be a total package web comic.  It features a reasonable update schedule with fantastic, stylized art, and a story with a focused sense of direction.  Gregory Holkan creates a stark contrast between his “cute-ish” art-style and his much darker storyline. His attention to detail and color in his backgrounds helps to set the scene and the mood. Nemesis has a polished and professional look.  Most impressive though, may be the juggling of so many different characters and aspects of the story in such an efficient manner.  Nemesis is part action comic, part political thriller, and part murder mystery.

While the concept of a society overrun by super heroes isn’t anything new, “Nemesis” brings fresh material to the table.  The world is watched over by the super powered and often arrogant “numans”, which are individuals with abilities beyond those of humans. When the worlds most powerful and most celebrated “numan”, Mr. Zenith is brutally (and easily) killed, the case falls into the hands of police detective Richard Murphy, one of the few remaining normal humans on the police force.  As more and more numans fall to the serial killer known as Nemesis, Richard faces internal pressure from other numans  who would rather not see a mere human handle a case this big, and the daunting task of being normal while hunting a villain who seems to effortlessly kill numans.

Usually, in comics, we’re looking for someone in a cape to swoop down and save the day.  But even though there are plenty of super powered numans flying around with their superiority complexes, “Nemesis” is ultimately a human struggle, and that’s what sets this series apart from most superhero adventures.  I recommend.
