Spike on King of RPGs By Jason Thompson and Victor Hao

This comic is a natural 20.

Oh, yeah. I went there.

Anyone who's ever tabletop roleplayed (or been forced to listen to stories of anyone else's RPG exploits) will appreciate the humor of "King of RPGs," which manages to satirize both shonen manga and roleplaying in the loving and informed manner of an obvious insider.

Originally a minicomic, "King of RPGs" is the story of a single Dungeons & Dragons-style game session, played by a group of college students and DM'ed ("dungeon mastered," for the uninitiated among you, meaning "ran by") a subtle parody of every shonen manga protagonist ever: A kid determined to be the BEST DUNGEON MASTER OF ALL TIME!

The players are a motley assortment of wannabe powergamers, RPG newbies, escapists, and basement trolls, and the comic lampoons everything from genderswap characters and near-terminal game slowdown to hilarious combat mishaps and online RPGs. All that's missing is the Funyuns.

THEY'RE STUCK IN THE MACHINE.

Spike is... surprised by the popularity of this comic. She shouldn't be.

Sure, the art is entirely composed of screen captures from the game Sims 2, but that's not the point. The game is merely a spring-board for Spike's amazingly caustic wit. Seriously, if her wit was liquid and came in little bottles, you could use it to clean concrete mixers.

Fortunantly for everyone other than concrete mixers, Spike's wit comes in the form of prose fiction. She fleshes out the horrid, horrid lives of her Sims one installment at a time, switching between first-person diary entries, close-third narration, and even the occasional goth poem.

If you've ever spent an excessive amount of time trolling Livejournal for no other reason than pure schadenfreude, Playing with Dolls is for you.

Joey Manley on Minus World By Bill Mudron and Anne Moloney.

Two of my favorite webcomics creators of all time have teamed up on a new project -- this is going to be good!
Too early to tell exactly where this is going, but with a creative team like Bill Mudron and Anne Maloney, here's your chance to get in on something really, really good as it's just starting up! ... read it now!
