Not-So-Frequently Asked Questions

Are you EVER going to update STANDARD DEVIATION!? - Yes. I was attempting to launch a comic (yea, the dinosaur one, and it was going to be good damnit) but first my publisher turned out to be a waste of time, then eventually due to circumstances my parter and inker had to back out. It wasted months of my time and a lot of effort that I can't get back. Dealing with alot of stuff killed my funny, but don't worry, its coming back.

Whats going on with all this new crap, I want my funny back! - Well I've wanted to publish an epic science fiction my whole life, and now I have a brief window before starting pilot training to do it in. I'm working hard to publish Jovian Luck with my own money, full color, go big or go home. Once I get set up at my new place I'll have time to get back into comedy too.

What is a Code Red? Why is that your pen name? - Well its an interesting story dating back to high school. Like any tightly knit group of friends we had alot of parties and shared a taste in girls. To avoid any confusion or division, we instituted a man code system. A Code Red essentially meant 'cockblocking in progress' and was to be used very subtly so your bro's could help give you some space to talk. It works in every situation, and is especially handy in bars and clubs. When I began drawing for the underground website edodo.org, I needed a pen name to hide my identity, although more for tradition than for actual safety, but some people do draw some things that could get them in trouble. The only handle that seemed to fit was Code Red. I intend to begin using my real name soon enough, considering I stand behind all my cartoons and statements.

What do you like to listen to? - Well, as far as music goes I'm into alternative bands like Brand New (thought they've let me down at live shows. NOTE TO BANDS: FANS WANT TO HEAR YOUR OLD STUFF!), although I've been on a big 90's kick lately. I'm also a comedy connoisseur, to include my favorites Brian Regan, Mitch Hedberg, and of course Dane Cook. And for the record, if you screw up a Dane Cook quote when I'm around, I will stab you in the jaw. Considering that I like music and comedy, I'm a huge fan of singing comedians like Stephen Lynch and Tenacious D.

How do you do it? - Aside from some pencil work to figure things out, everything is done on the computer in Photoshop. It takes about an hour or two for each cartoon, depending on the number of frames. I'm hoping to get a Cintiq soon.

What art classes have you taken? - None, believe it or not. Entirely self-taught, with the help of a few cartooning books growing up.

How long have you been drawing? - Since way back in the day. Just as a hobby, and was naturally good at it. I used to sell drawing of my first character "Rob the Ruddy duck" for quarters on the elementary school bus.

Who are your characters based off of? - The Standard Deviation characters are really just a mix of mine and my friend's personalities, especially since most of the the strips are inspired by experiences. Brad and Josh are more extensions of my two selves, put in situations encountered by me and my friends. The ancillary characters are based off of people I meet as well. Even my dog, although he's actually a black lab.

Can you draw something for me? - I'm a busy guy but I'm willing to talk with you about anything you have in mind. Check the contact page for how to reach me.
